More than 3,000 barangays nationwide are susceptible to rain-induced landslides and flooding due to Tropical Depression Pilandok and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) said.
According to the MGB, 3,786 barangays are susceptible to geohazards from August 30 to September 2 based on rainfall forecasts from the state weather bureau PAGASA.
As of 8 p.m. Sunday, August 30, most of the 3,786 landslide- and flood-prone barangays were in Luzon:
- Ilocos Region — 2,235
- Central Luzon — 718
- Cordillera Administrative Region — 617
- Cagayan Valley — 107
- MIMAROPA — 87
- CALABARZON — 22
“Based on the latest DOST-PAGASA 72-hour rainfall forecast, residents in listed areas and those nearby or downstream are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions,” the MGB said.
The MGB said geohazard susceptibility maps are produced based on local geology, landforms and terrain, as well as human activities that could increase disaster risks.
“The DENR-MGB barangay lists are generated using rainfall forecast data from PAGASA, rain-induced landslide and flooding susceptibility maps from DENR-MGB, and barangay boundaries from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA),” the bureau said.
“The rainfall forecast is applied to the hazard maps and barangay boundaries. Based on the established rainfall threshold, the barangays that may be affected by flooding or rain-induced landslides are identified and included in the DENR-MGB barangay lists,” it added.
Tropical Depression Pilandok maintained its strength as it continued to meander over the Philippine Sea east of Extreme Northern Luzon, according to PAGASA.
