Independents, NPC seen to dominate Senate in 20th Congress

As the Commission on Elections starts the canvassing of votes from Eleksyon 2025, the partial list of winners showed that the 20th Congress Senate will be composed mostly of independent lawmakers and members of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).

Based on the partial, unofficial list of 2025 senatorial race winners, there will be six NPC members who will sit in the Senate when the 20th Congress opens.

NPC members who are incumbent senators are Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Loren Legarda, Sherwin Gatchalian and JV Ejercito.

They will be joined by NPC stalwart Vicente “Tito” Sotto III— who currently ranks 8th in the unofficial count of Comelec— and reelectionist Senator Lito Lapid— who is now on the 11th spot in the magic 12.

Meanwhile, six senators will make up the independent bloc should Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and Sagip Party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta be proclaimed as winners in the Eleksyon 2025 senatorial race.

Other independent senators who will still sit in the upper chamber in the 20th Congress are Alan Peter Cayetano, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Raffy Tulfo, and Joel Villanueva.

A politician running or sitting in office is considered independent if he or she is not affiliated with any political party in the country.

With half of the Senate in the 20th Congress to be composed of six independents and six NPC members, the other 12 will come from the following parties:

-4 Nacionalista Party members: Mark Villar, Pia Cayetano, Camille Villar, Imee Marcos

-3 PDP-Laban members: Robin Padilla, Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, Bong Go

-Lakas-CMD member Erwin Tulfo

-Akbayan member Risa Hontiveros

-Katipunan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino member Bam Aquino

-Liberal Party of Kiko Pangilinan

-Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino member Jinggoy Estrada

Nacionalista Party stalwarts Manny Villar and his family are allied with both President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and former President Rodrigo Duterte.

PDP-Laban members are loyal to their chairman, who is currently detained in The Hague for crimes against humanity charges before the International Criminal Court.

Lakas-CMD is allied with the Marcos administration, while Akbayan and Katipunan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino are allied with the Liberal Party. —LDF, GMA Integrated News
