Mindanao Mountain Added to ASEAN Heritage Park Consideration

KORONADAL CITY (MindaNews / 4 June) — The Mount Balatukan Range Natural Park in Misamis Oriental is being considered for inclusion in the ASEAN Heritage Park (AHP) network, according to the ASEAN Center for Biodiversity (ACB). The proposal was discussed during the 12th AHP Committee meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, alongside potential additions from Malaysia and Thailand.

ACB executive director Dr. Jerome Montemayor emphasized the importance of regional collaboration for biodiversity conservation, describing AHPs as protected areas representing the ASEAN region’s shared natural heritage. The AHP network currently includes 63 sites across Southeast Asia.

If approved, Mount Balatukan would become the 15th AHP in the Philippines and the 10th in Mindanao. The mountain range, recognized for its high conservation value, is listed as a Key Biodiversity Area, Important Bird Area, and Conservation Priority Area.

Other Mindanao AHPs include Mount Apo Natural Park, Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, and Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary, among others. (Bong S. Sarmiento / MindaNews)
