DAVAO CITY (June 11) – The southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” continues to bring rain and thunderstorms to parts of the Philippines, including Mindanao. According to PAGASA, Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with rain showers, with eastern and southeastern areas likely to see moderate to heavy rainfall, which could trigger flash floods or landslides. Other parts of the region can expect isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms, bringing brief downpours mainly in the afternoons or evenings.
Residents in the Caraga region and Davao Region are advised to be alert for scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, which may lead to flash floods or landslides. PAGASA warns that moderate to heavy rainfall in these provinces could cause rapid runoff and soil erosion. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and monitor updates from local authorities.
For the rest of Mindanao, weather conditions will be relatively more stable, with partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. While long sunny breaks are possible, short-lived thunderstorms or bursts of rain may occur, typically in the late afternoon or evening.
Winds over Mindanao are expected to remain normal for the season, with light to moderate winds blowing from the southwest to south. Coastal waters around Mindanao will be slight to moderate, making it generally safe for fishing boats and other small sea vessels.
A tropical weather disturbance remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, moving away from the Philippines and heading toward southern China. This system is slightly enhancing the southwest monsoon, contributing to the continued rains over Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
In the immediate term, Mindanao’s weather will be shaped by the habagat, with scattered rains and thunderstorms expected, especially in Caraga and Davao regions. Elsewhere across Mindanao, generally fair to cloudy skies with isolated showers are anticipated, typical of monsoon season afternoons. Residents are advised to be prepared for monsoon-driven rains until the system fully moves farther away and the habagat weakens.
