Davao Residents Decry Hazardous Potholes on Local Highway

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / May 21) — A section of the national highway right in front of the giant Holcim cement plant in this city has been drawing criticism from motorists and residents due to its numerous potholes. The 100-meter stretch in Barangay Ilang has gone viral on social media since Monday. Motorcycle driver Binsoy Caguitla, who frequently uses the road to fetch his children, lamented, “It’s right in front of a cement plant, but looks like some concrete has disappeared.” Jessa Miagao, a resident who drives a pick-up truck, added, “It’s hard, especially when it rains. Once the road gets flooded, and you can’t see the potholes, you won’t know where you’ll fall.” Caguitla noted that the road’s deterioration, likely due to heavy traffic and substandard materials, began nearly a year ago. Barangay captain Amado Babao raised the issue with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), citing 10 traffic incidents from January to April and the urgent need for repairs. DPWH-XI announced a ₱31.02 million project to reconstruct the road using thicker materials, with construction set to begin in June and complete by late 2025 or early 2026. Spokesperson Dean Ortiz explained delays were due to waiting for clearance from the City Transport and Traffic Management Board and the need to address flooding and drainage issues. While one lane may be closed during construction, no rerouting will occur. (Ian Carl Espinosa / MindaNews)
