Authorities discovered a tunnel dug by still unidentified suspects who tried to rob two adjacent pawnshops in Novaliches, Quezon City.
According to Jun Veneracion’s report in “24 Oras” on Monday, personnel of the Novaliches Police Station entered a sewer where they spotted a tunnel.
Police noticed that the tunnel was narrow and could only fit one person.
While the authorities did not find any possible suspect, they seized some items like a hydraulic jack, a crowbar, and a portable grinder.
“Medyo marami or malawak na ‘yung nagawa nila, so definitely medyo matagal na nila yun ginawa. Kailangan maisara ‘yun,” said Police Major Jennifer Ganaban, Quezon City Police District (QCPD) public information office chief.
(What they’ve done is quite extensive or wide-ranging, so they have definitely been working on it for a while. That needs to be closed up.)
Authorities usually refer to suspects who carry out pawnshop robberies in this fashion as the “Termite Gang.”
One of the target pawnshops’ floors was almost damaged by the tunnel-digging, with the vault just less than a foot away. The exterior area of the shop was almost pierced through.

A pawnshop security guard noticed an unusual noise from below the ground on the midnight of April 22 and reported it to authorities.
“Nahukay pero hanggang diyan pa lang naman. Kumbaga hindi pa talaga nagbukas. Naagapan din naman,” said Cristina Servañez, area head of Magdalena Pawnshop.
(They managed to dig, but only up to that point. They haven’t dug through yet. We caught it just in time.)
