CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – June 30, 2025 — The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro, under the leadership of Club President Neil J. Que, held a commemorative ceremony to unveil a supplemental marker in honor of the late Justiniano Borja, one of the city’s most respected former mayors. The unveiling took place at JR Borja & Kiosko Kagawasan Park in Divisoria Plaza, a location deeply connected to the city’s cultural heritage.
Positioned behind the iconic monument of Justiniano Borja—originally sculpted by National Artist Napoleon Abueva between 1977 and 1978—the new marker adds historical depth and context to Borja’s legacy. This project highlights the Rotary Club’s dedication to preserving local heritage and paying tribute to leaders who have significantly shaped the city’s development. Borja served as Cagayan de Oro’s mayor from 1954 to 1964, a period marked by transformative leadership and progressive governance.
Key Rotary officers were present during the ceremony, including Project Chairman Tito Noel V. Mora, Past President Carlos Gorospe, President Nominee Nilo Ampit, and Director Jairus John Gochuco. Also in attendance were spouses of Rotary members such as President Juliet Empedrad, along with members of the Gorospe family, reflecting the Rotary Club’s strong sense of community and unity.
City Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy expressed his appreciation for the Rotary Club’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between local government and civic organizations. The event was also graced by representatives from the City Museum and Heritage Studies Center, the City Historical Commission, and the City Information Office.
Through this project, the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro continues its mission of civic service by preserving the city’s historical identity and honoring leaders who laid the foundation for its modern-day progress.
