The Registry of the International Criminal Court has outlined proposed procedures for the trial of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who faces charges of crimes against humanity.
Among the recommendations made by the ICC Registry, which provides administrative and operational support to the Chambers and the Office of the Prosecutor, is a requirement for parties and participants to clearly identify proposed redactions to the transcripts by email and submit them to the Registry together with the corresponding post facto redactions form.
The Registry also recommended adopting the transcript verification process used in the case of Prosecutor v. Mahamat Said Abdel Kani.
It also urged Trial Chamber III, as well as the parties and participants, to make use of the witness-entity and evidentiary-materials (E-binders) modules in the Judicial Workflow Platform, “so that the record of the case may be maintained within a single, consolidated, and comprehensive platform.”
During the first status conference on May 27, ICC Trial Chamber III Presiding Judge Joanna Korner said the court would order a reexamination of Duterte’s fitness to stand trial in the case involving alleged abuses in his campaign against illegal drugs while he was Davao City mayor and later president.
The court set the start of the trial for November 30, 2026.
It will hold two more status conferences on June 23 and July 14. — VBL, GMA News
