Eraserheads Highlight Traditional Mindanao Instrument at Comic-Con Premiere

Filipino rock icons Eraserheads debuted in the comic world with “Eraserheads: Combo on the Run” at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) last month. The SDCC-exclusive cover, illustrated by Filipino-American artists Whilce Portacio and Raymund Lee, features the band heroically walking from a burning cityscape while carrying traditional instruments, including a two-stringed boat lute from Mindanao. Known across indigenous groups by names like kudyapi, hegalong, faglong, and kudlong, this lute is central to songs, epics, and rituals in the region. Produced by Kid Heroes Productions and DVent Pictures, the 24-page anthology reimagines the band as “music-powered heroes” in four action-packed stories blending music, mythology, and adventure. Portacio, known for his work on X-Men and The Punisher, has consistently incorporated Filipino myths into his art. Written by Patricio Ginelsa and Justin Quizon and illustrated by Lee, Felix Morales, and Ardie Aquino, the comic draws inspiration from Maria Diane Ventura’s award-winning documentary, which also screened at SDCC. The Portacio-Lee cover is limited to 250 copies, with other editions featuring artwork by DC Comics artist Stephen Segovia and the illustrators. Pre-orders for the SDCC-exclusive edition are now available.
