7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes General Santos and Mindanao

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/8 June 2026)—A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Maasim in Sarangani Province at 7:37 am, Monday, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to issue a tsunami warning and advise coastal residents to move to higher ground. The quake, with a depth of 33 kilometers, was located 32 kilometers south-southwest of Maasim and was felt across Mindanao, including its northern regions.

Local disaster teams swiftly monitored coastal areas and coordinated evacuations, while emergency responders prepared for aftershocks. Authorities are assessing damages, with social media flooded with videos of collapsed structures. PHIVOLCS urged the public to stay calm and follow official updates.

Davao City suspended work and classes after experiencing Intensity 5 shaking. Panabo City also canceled face-to-face classes, shifting to alternative learning modes. The Island Garden City of Samal ordered coastal evacuations and suspended classes for safety inspections. Mayor Lemuel T. Reyes placed Samal under Blue Alert, signaling heightened preparedness.
