LTO suspends license of sports car driver for using cellphone while driving

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) said it suspended the license of a driver of a sports car shown in a viral video using a cellphone while driving on a highway.

“We already suspended the driver’s license of the identified driver for 90 days pending the result of the investigation,” LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said, according to a press release issued by LTO.

The sports car, a Porsche, was also placed under alarm, the LTO said.

Mendoza said the driver of the Porsche sports car was creating social media content at the time the video was taken.

The LTO chief said it was a clear violation of road safety rules.

“Anuman ang klase ng sasakyan na minamaneho ay dapat matuto pa rin tayong sumunod sa mga batas trapiko. If the driver is indeed a content creator, then there is this responsibility for him to set a good example to his followers,” Mendoza said.

(Regardless of the kind of vehicle one drives, we should all learn to follow traffic rules.)

According to LTO-Intelligence and Investigation Division chief Renante Melitante, the driver is liable for three violations: reckless driving, violation of the Anti-Distracted Driving Act (Sec. 4 of R.A. No. 10913), and being an Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle (Sec. 27 (a) of R.A. No. 4136).

The driver’s license may be revoked as a maximum penalty for the third violation, the LTO said.

The LTO also issued a show cause order to the registered owner of the sports car.

Both the driver and the registered owner were summoned to appear before the LTO Central Office and explain why they should not be held administratively liable. —KG, GMA Integrated News
