The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show cause order (SCO) against the driver of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) for the alleged unauthorized use of blinkers and sirens on a public road.
In a statement on Wednesday, the LTO cited a viral video which showed a confrontation between the SUV driver and the person taking the video.
This was after the person taking the video noticed the SUV’s use of blinkers and sirens, which are usually used by authorized emergency and government response vehicles.
The driver and the registered owner of the SUV were told to appear before the LTO’s Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) on June 2, 2026 at 11 a.m.
They were ordered to submit a sworn explanation for offenses such as the use of unauthorized blinkers, for using a motor vehicle operating with sirens, and for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.
The SUV driver and registered owner were also directed to immediately remove the sirens and blinkers and to surrender these to the LTO.
The SUV was placed under an LTO alarm, while the driver’s license of the SUV driver was placed under preventive suspension for 90 days and should be surrendered to the LTO.
LTO chief and Transportation Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao reminded private motorists not to use blinkers and sirens that give the impression that they enjoy special privileges on the road.
“Hindi status symbol ang blinkers at sirena. Nakalaan lamang ang mga ito sa mga sasakyang may awtoridad at ginagamit sa tunay na emergency response. Hindi natin papayagan na abusuhin ito para manindak o makalusot sa trapiko,” Lacanilao said.
(Blinkers and sirens are not status symbols. These are only for authorized vehicles and may be only used in real cases of emergency response. We will not allow these to be abused to intimidate others or to weave out of traffic.)
“Kaya malinaw ang mensahe natin sa publiko: kung hindi kayo awtorisado, alisin na ninyo ang mga nakakabit na blinkers, wang-wang, at kahalintulad na kagamitan. Hindi ito palamuti at lalong hindi ito nagbibigay ng espesyal na karapatan sa kalsada,” he added.
(Our message to the public is clear: if you are unauthorized, remove your blinkers, wang-wang, and similar devices. These are not decors and does not confer special rights on the road.) — JMA, GMA News
