A building caretaker died after being crushed by an elevator inside a four-storey building in Balut in Tondo, Manila.

According to Marisol Abdurahman’s report in “24 Oras” on Thursday, a Scene of the Crime Operations (SOCO) investigator said the victim was found inside the maintenance room adjacent to the elevator.

Authorities discovered the victim with his head leaning out into the elevator shaft when they arrived.

The victim’s sibling was left in shock by the incident, sharing that they had just spoken to each other on Wednesday.

“Paalis napo ‘yan sa ibang bansa eh [He was supposedly bound for overseas to work],” the victim’s older sister shared.

Meanwhile, a man who was reportedly a colleague of the victim refused to give an interview.

Investigation by the Manila Police District (MPD) showed that the victim was pinned by the elevator, which also hit his head. Investigators noted that he was reportedly inspecting something in the area at the time of the incident.

“Naipit siya doon sa elevator. May dalawang pintuan doon, yung isa na pinto ng elevator at isa naman tanke ng tubig. Nakita natin yung pagitan niya, walang harang. Hindi niya napansin na bumababa itong elevator na naipit siya,” said MPD spokesperson Police Major Philipp Ines.

(He got trapped by the elevator. There are two doors there—one is for the elevator and the other is for a water tank. We saw the space between them, and there was no barrier. He didn’t notice the elevator descending, and that’s how he got pinned.)

The building owner, on the other hand, is willing to shoulder the funeral expenses of the victim.

“Willing kami sa investigation. Willing naman kami i-shoulder yung funeral, yung compensation ng pamilya,” said Alexander Tan.

(We are willing to cooperate with the investigation. We are also willing to shoulder the funeral expenses, as well as the compensation for the family.)

But the MPD said that it will depend on the investigation if the building owner has liability on the incident. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BM, GMA News
