PHO probes death of newborn at Loon hospital

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Bohol has officially launched an investigation into the death of a newborn baby boy at the Cong. Natalio Castillo Memorial Hospital in the town of Loon on June 3, 2025.

According to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Fruserma May “Em-em Uy” the office is currently working to gather all relevant information regarding the incident in coordination with other concerned agencies to ensure justice for the infant and his family.

“Navisit na namo ang Loon hospital ug napa-present ang case ug ang circumstances surrounding it,” Dr. Uy said. She added that, together with the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP), specialists from the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Medical Center (GCGMMC), and the Provincial Legal Office (PLO), they have called in and heard the side of the personnel involved in the incident.

“Napatawag ug napaminaw na pud namo, jointly with the SP and PLO, ang side sa ginikanan sa bata,” Uy added.

Medical specialists are expected to visit the Loon hospital to assess the facility and evaluate the qualifications and actions of the staff who attended to the mother and newborn.

Dr. Uy emphasized that the PHO will only release an official report and recommendations once the full investigation and assessment are completed.

The incident has drawn significant public concern and attention, prompting local health officials and experts to ensure that no mistakes are overlooked and that appropriate accountability is observed.

Meanwhile, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, through its Committee on Health chaired by Board Member Romulo Cepedoza, has also initiated a separate inquiry into the incident.

Cepedoza is expected to release a committee report next week, detailing his findings and recommendations based on the investigation conducted.
