The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is scheduled to complete the construction of its flood-control project in Tagbilaran City by next month in a bid to address the perennial flooding along CPG Avenue before the height of the rainy season, an official said.
According to DPWH First District Engineer John Paul Gascon, they will complete the installation of pipes and interconnection of drainage systems along the thoroughfare and Peñaflor Street.
The upgraded drainage system will allow rainwater accumulated along CPG Avenue to flow to pipes installed along Peñaflor Street.
“If mahuman na ang whole stretch of the pipe sa ilawom, itap na namo ang drainage from CPG, near Bohol Wisdom [School], going to Peñaflor. Karon dili pa nato ma tap kay open pa ang drainage sa ubos. If itap na namo karon, mo baha sa Peñaflor kay dili pa connected ang drainage, so if ma connect nato wala nay flooding diha, and before July ma-connect na,” said Gascon.
A long stretch of the CPG Avenue near the Bohol Wisdom School has been known to flood easily even with slight rains.
This has long drawn flak from the public, prompting the DPWH to start the flood-control project in September last year.
A total of P75 million was allocated by the national government to address the longstanding problem.
Gascon assured that the new drainage system will be able to handle large amounts of rainwater.
“Ang ginawa naming drainage kaya i-accommodate ang baha kahit four times ng [size] ng Bohol Wisdom School. ‘Wag lang uulan for two week straight, kasi pag ganyan babaha talaga,” said Gascon.
According to Gascon, they are still awaiting the allocation by the Tagbilaran City government of a site for a treatment facility that will allow the DPWH to dump floodwaters to the Tagbilaran City Bay.
He however noted that the upgraded drainage system will be enough to address the flooding problem along CPG Avenue even without having to release floodwaters into the bay. (AD)
