THE Visayas Command (Viscom) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines has stated that it is prepared to assist the police and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to ensure a peaceful and safe Barangay and Sanguniang Kabataan Elections in October.
Viscom issued this commitment after Comelec Chairman George Garcia announced that the Comelec en banc had agreed to proceed with holding the barangay election in Negros Oriental under Comelec control.
Army Lieutenant General Benedict Arevalo, commander of Viscom, said that a contingency plan had been made since last March and that enough soldiers had been sent to the province to help the Comelec and the Philippine National Police (PNP) ensure the security and orderliness of the election.
“We will coordinate with the PNP to ensure that our contingency is synchronized with their deployment and security plan. Likewise, coordination will be made with the Comelec as to the guidelines on how they will go about placing the entire province under their control,” Arevalo said.
“Rest assured that our security efforts will never waver. Viscom, being your reliable Armed Forces in the Visayas, will remain highly committed to our mandate on ensuring the safety and security of our people in Negros Oriental, as they exercise their rights (to vote) this coming election,” he added.
To recall, the late governor Roel Degamo and nine other civilians were shot dead inside his compound in Pamplona town on March 4, 2023. (AYB, TPT)
