Senatorial candidate Benhur Abalos Jr. paid tribute to the women of Davao de Oro during his visit to the province on March 8, in time for the 18th Bulawan Festival and International Women’s Day.
Speaking before a crowd, the former DILG Secretary acknowledged the indispensable role of women not just within their households but also in governance and society as a whole. He emphasized that women serve as pillars of strength, guiding families and communities toward progress and stability.
“Tulad na lang ng ating mahal na Governor Dotdot Gonzaga na ating ina. Sa amin sa Mandaluyong, ang nagdala sa amin ay ang aming mga kababaihan. Kaya’t ang kababaihan ay isang malaking pwersa kahit saan man sa mundo, dahil kayo ang ilaw ng tahanan,” Abalos remarked.
He highlighted the resilience, leadership, and dedication of women in public service, stressing that their impact extends far beyond the confines of their homes. According to him, women in leadership positions bring a unique perspective, compassion, and commitment that significantly contribute to governance and nation-building.
In a heartfelt moment, Abalos also shared personal anecdotes about the three most influential women in his life — his mother, his wife, and his eldest daughter — all of whom played an integral role in shaping his character and career.
His mother, whom he described as a guiding force in his life, passed away during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. He recounted how her strength and wisdom remained with him, shaping his values and dedication to public service.
His wife, whom he deeply respects, has been his source of unwavering support through the years, standing by him in both personal and professional challenges.
Meanwhile, his eldest daughter, who succumbed to an illness two decades ago, left an indelible mark on his heart. Abalos recalled how her passing taught him to appreciate every moment and further strengthened his resolve to serve others.
Reflecting on these personal experiences, Abalos expressed his deep admiration for the sacrifices, endurance, and unwavering love that women bring to their families and communities.
He urged everyone to recognize and celebrate the vital contributions of women, not just on International Women’s Day, but every single day.
As he concluded his speech, Abalos reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for women’s rights and empowerment, ensuring that they have equal opportunities in leadership, employment, and social development.
He emphasized that uplifting women means uplifting entire communities, as they play a crucial role in shaping a better and more inclusive future for the country. PR
