The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show cause order (SCO) against the driver of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) for illegally using red and blue blinkers.

In a statement on Sunday, the LTO stressed that the use of blinkers are for the exclusive use of authorized government vehicles and emergency responders.

The illegally-installed signalling devices on the privately-owned SUV might cause confusion and reflect the wrong use of privilege on the road, the agency added.

“Ang paggamit ng blinkers ay para lamang sa awtorisadong sasakyan at indibidwal. Ang paggamit nito ng mga pribadong sasakyan ay malinaw na paglabag sa batas,” said LTO chief and Transportation Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao.

(Using blinkers is only for authorized vehicles and individuals. The use of blinkers on private vehicles is a clear violation of the law.)

The registered owner and the driver of the SUV were ordered to appear before the LTO’s Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) on May 7 at 1 p.m. to explain why they should not be held liable for the unauthorized or unlawful use of blinkers and for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.

The driver was also told to surrender his driver’s license, which will be placed under a 90-day preventive suspension while the SUV was placed under LTO alarm status.

The LTO said it will resolve the case based on the evidence at hand should the respondents fail to show up and submit a written explanation of the incident.

The agency reiterated its warning to motorists not to use illegal devices on their vehicles and to follow traffic rules. — JMA, GMA News
