Talacogon LGU to Livestream Wake of Rene Clert N. Baterbonia

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 15 June 2026) – Talacogon, Agusan del Sur eagerly awaits the return of its son, Rene Clert N. Baterbonia, today (Monday, June 15). The local government has pledged to livestream his entire wake, which will last until June 23, with burial set for June 24—16 days after he drowned in Dipaculao, Aurora during a team-building activity with the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles, where he was an incoming freshman.

The 18-year-old Baterbonia, Palarong Pambansa 2025’s MVP and a former Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) Blue Knight, had just graduated from ADDU Senior High School in April before being recruited by ADMU, his “dream school.” He arrived in Manila on June 4 but tragically passed away four days later.

The Talacogon LGU announced on social media that the livestream would allow family, friends, and supporters worldwide to pay their respects. His remains are expected to arrive between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Monday, with public viewing starting Tuesday at the Municipal Evacuation and Gymnasium in Barangay San Agustin.

A three-day wake in Davao City preceded the caravan’s departure from ADDU Senior High School at 8 a.m. Crowds gathered along the route, with stops in Panabo, Tagum, and Carmen, where mourners waved and chanted “Hustisya” and “MVP.”

Talacogon National High School, Baterbonia’s alma mater, mourned the loss of their former student, remembering him as a humble and passionate athlete who inspired many. Last May, he visited Talacogon Central Elementary School for Brigada Eskwela, promising to donate computers in five years.

Instead, he returns home today—not as the successful man he dreamed of becoming, but as a beloved son laid to rest in “Baterbonia country.” (Carolyn O. Arguillas with a report from Yas D. Ocampo / MindaNews)
