GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews / 20 June) – A modern P115-million laboratory facility under construction at the fish port complex here is expected to bolster the local fisheries sector, particularly the tuna industry, officials said. Elizer Salilig, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) national director, stated that the fish health and quality control laboratory is part of the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Cold Examination Facility for Agriculture (CEFA) project. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 17, and the facility will also serve as the satellite office of BFAR-Region 12, based in Koronadal City. Salilig emphasized that the project represents a commitment to a more resilient, safer, and science-driven fisheries sector. BFAR-12 regional director Usop Pendaliday Jr. highlighted that the P114.9-million facility will occupy a 1,470-square meter lot with a 648 sqm floor area and is expected to be completed within a year. The initiative was discussed during last year’s 24th Tuna Congress and received support from the Regional Development Council-12, the tuna industry, and the city government of General Santos. Tuna magnate Marfenio Y. Tan described the groundbreaking as the realization of a long-standing dream for the local fishing industry, emphasizing its necessity for the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines.” Agriculture Undersecretary Carlos Carag, chair of the CEFA Steering Committee, explained that the facility will uphold food safety, prevent diseases, and combat illegal trade, functioning as a one-stop center for testing and inspections to meet international trade requirements. Last year, the country’s tuna production reached 201,034 metric tons, according to DA data. General Santos City, known for its fresh tuna exports and six tuna canneries employing thousands, continues to be a key player in the industry. (Bong S. Sarmiento / MindaNews)
