DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 15 July 2026) — Presidential Peace Adviser Mel Senen Sarmiento has been appointed concurrently as chair of the government’s Peace Implementing Panel in the Bangsamoro Peace Process.
The announcement was made by Atty. Claire Castro, Undersecretary of the Presidential Communications Office and Palace Press Officer, at a briefing with the Malacañang Press Corps. Sarmiento’s appointment follows his role as Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity since April 21.
Sarmiento acknowledged the challenge of leading both roles but emphasized seamless alignment in advancing the Bangsamoro peace process under President Marcos’ administration, which prioritizes implementing the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB). He pledged to work closely with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for transparent and time-bound fulfillment of CAB commitments.
MILF Peace Implementing Panel Chair Mohagher Iqbal welcomed the move, calling it a “most welcome development,” expressing hope for continued progress under the CAB. Meanwhile, BARMM Interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua affirmed adherence to the national government’s decision.
While Gus Miclat of Initiatives for International Dialogue noted concerns over overlapping responsibilities, he supported Sarmiento’s swift engagement with stakeholders. Rufa Guiam urged attention to transitional justice addressing historical injustices.
Former Peace Adviser Teresita Deles cautioned about the workload but wished Sarmiento success, stressing the need for urgent action amid delays in the peace process.
Sarmiento, previously a local government official and LP Secretary-General, is the sixth GPH PIP chair since the panel’s inception a decade ago. (Carolyn O. Arguillas / MindaNews)
