Surigao fishermen rescued in Leyte

A passing fishing boat rescued two of the six fishermen from Surigao City who went missing after their boat sank near San Ricardo town at the tip of Southern Leyte last weekend.

Crew members of the passing fishing boat identified as FBCA Golden Top 88 brought the rescued fishermen to Surigao City where they were given food and water by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

They were identified as Joseph Mapalo, 35, and Jesmar Besing, 36.

The Coast Guard said Mapalo and Besing were among six fishermen who left Surigao City for Limasawa to fish last Feb. 28. Upon reaching San Ricardo, they encountered rough waves that broke the bow of their boat.

They reportedly managed to report the incident to their relatives through phone calls but eventually lost contact to unstable network connection.

The Coast Guard raised the alarm to other vessels in the area to look for the remaining four missing fishermen.
