‘Kabayan’ makes landfall in Manay, Davao Oriental; weakens into tropical depression

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 18 December) – Tropical cyclone “Kabayan” made landfall over Barangay Concepcion in Manay, Davao Oriental at 9:30 a.m. Monday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

In a weather bulletin released at 10:30 a.m., Pagasa said that Kabayan is expected to bring significant amount of rainfall over Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, and Davao Region on Monday.

The agency forecasted that Kabayan will “cross the rugged terrain of Mindanao, and emerge over the Sulu Sea” between afternoon and evening of Monday.

Karen Lou Deloso, information officer of Province of Davao Oriental, told MindaNews that some areas in the province have been flooded.

However, the flooded areas were not immediately known.

She said that rescue teams have been deployed to the affected areas to provide assistance to the affected families.

“Everything has been prepositioned already, including the heavy equipment,” she said.

In its Tropical Cyclone Bulletin (TCB) No. 11 issued at 11 a.m. today, the weather bureau said that Kabayan has weakened into a tropical depression.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No 1. was hoisted over Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Davao de Oro, the northern portion of Davao Oriental (Baganga, Manay, Caraga, Tarragona, Lupon, Banaybanay, Boston, Cateel), Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur;

Davao del Norte, Davao City, the northern portion of Cotabato (Arakan, Carmen, Banisilan, Alamada, President Roxas, Kabacan, Matalam, Antipas, Magpet, Libungan, Pigkawayan), the northern portion of Maguindanao (Buldon, Barira, Matanog, Parang, Sultan Kudarat, Sultan Mastura);

The western and central portion of Zamboanga del Norte (Siayan, Sindangan, Jose Dalman, Manukan, Pres. Manuel A. Roxas, Sergio Osmeña Sr., Katipunan, Dipolog City, Polanco, Mutia, Piñan, Dapitan City, Sibutad, La Libertad, Rizal, Siocon, Baliguian, Gutalac, Labason, Kalawit, Tampilisan, Liloy, Salug, Godod, Bacungan), the western and central portion of Zamboanga del Sur (Midsalip, Labangan, Tukuran, Aurora, Sominot, Ramon Magsaysay, Tambulig, Dumingag, Mahayag, Josefina, Molave, Vincenzo A. Sagun, Guipos, Dimataling, Dumalinao, Lakewood, Dinas, San Pablo, Tigbao, Tabina, Kumalarang, Lapuyan, Pitogo, Margosatubig, San Miguel, Bayog, Pagadian City);

And, Zamboanga Sibugay, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Agusan del Sur.

In TCB No. 11 , Pagasa said that Kabayan packed maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 70 km/h.
