Hundreds of families in General Santos City were displaced due to severe flooding caused by continuous heavy rains from the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). As of July 24, 2026, nearly 300 families (1,091 individuals) sought refuge in evacuation centers, including the Barangay Calumpang Gym, Bulaong Satellite Phase 2 Gym in Labangal, and Carcon Village Covered Court in Lagao.
The Makar River and interconnected creeks overflowed, submerging low-lying areas in Barangays Calumpang, Labangal, and Lagao. In Calumpang alone, around 400 families were displaced, with floodwaters affecting communities like Rovalgon, Quilantang, and Puting Bato. Labangal reported 92 families evacuated, with 16 houses completely destroyed and one partially damaged.
Authorities are verifying reports of unaffected residents registering for aid, while the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) works to finalize beneficiary lists for relief distribution. Despite the flooding, no state of calamity was declared, classes continued, and major roads remained passable. (Justine Paul Paraz/MindaNews)
