The provincial government of Davao del Norte will construct retention ponds to mitigate flooding, with a ₱400-million project financed by the Land Bank of the Philippines. Provincial Engineer Edwin S. Misa confirmed that the detailed engineering plan is underway, funded by an existing loan. The ponds will reduce flooding in flood-prone areas such as Tagum City and the municipalities of Sto. Tomas, Kapalong, and Braulio E. Dujali.
Misa, who visited a landslide site in San Fernando, Bukidnon, offered assistance to the DPWH in clearing debris after a landslide blocked the Kapalong-Talaingod-Valencia Road since July 5. He also mentioned an upcoming ₱3-billion flood control budget allocation.
Davao del Norte has faced severe floods in 2026 due to weather disturbances, including shear line rains and typhoons, affecting multiple towns and cities. The retention ponds aim to address backflows from rivers like the Libuganon and Saug systems, which contribute to flooding in low-lying areas.
