The Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro celebrated a Requiem Mass for Pope Francis at the San Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral on Monday, 28 April 2025, honoring his life and legacy. Among the parishioners was 60-year-old Maria Rosal, who traveled from upper Carmen to join hundreds in prayer. She meticulously wiped the glass frame of a large portrait of Pope Francis placed near the altar, expressing her belief that his long life and dedication to the poor and migrants were miracles. Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope, died on 21 April at the age of 88 and was buried in Vatican City on 26 April. Churches across northeastern Mindanao rang their bells during his funeral to commemorate his commitment to the marginalized and the environment. During the Homily, Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Emeritus Antonio Ledesma, also a Jesuit, praised Pope Francis as a shepherd for all seasons, emphasizing his vision of a church for the poor and his advocacy for interfaith dialogue and environmental protection. The Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI), led by Supreme Bishop Joel Porlales, also paid tribute, recognizing Pope Francis as a pope for the people at the margins. Archbishop Cosme Damian Almedilla of the Diocese of Butuan instructed his churches to ring their bells in gratitude for the late pontiff. (Froilan Gallardo / MindaNews)
