ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews / 21 August 2026) – Ateneo de Zamboanga University is exploring additional measures to enhance campus security despite authorities ruling out conspiracy behind Tuesday’s shooting at its junior high school campus, which resulted in two student fatalities, University President Fr. Ernald Andal, SJ, stated in a video on the university’s Facebook page. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed that the perpetrator acted alone, with no evidence linking the attack to religion, bullying, or mistreatment by a teacher. Andal acknowledged that the university’s safety protocols met established standards but emphasized a review of further protective measures. Classes remain suspended, with junior high and elementary students returning gradually from August 24 to 28, followed by non-academic activities focused on emotional well-being from September 1 to 4. Andal stressed respecting the privacy and dignity of the affected families, who are enduring profound grief. Psychological sessions were conducted for 92 students, 16 parents, and 105 teachers and staff. Dr. Norvie Jalani, a faculty member and parent, called for visible preventive actions alongside healing efforts. Concerns were raised over irresponsible social media posts sharing graphic content of the incident, with businessman Juni Ilimin urging protection for children’s mental health. Meanwhile, city councilor Melchor Sadain proposed an ordinance requiring schools to strengthen security measures, with penalties for non-compliance, set to be discussed on August 24. Frencie L.
