Discipline among the public can help address solid waste management problems in the capital region amid piles of garbage being collected as flooding hits parts of the country, Metro Manila Council president and San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said Sunday.
Zamora noted that all 17 local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila have their respective solid waste management programs.
“All 17 Metro Manila LGUs have solid waste management programs in place aimed at ensuring that garbage across the NCR is collected and managed efficiently,” he said in a statement. “A strong partnership between the LGUs and our citizens is very important.”
He emphasized that residents must observe proper waste disposal practices.
“Discipline among our constituents in practicing proper waste disposal, coupled with the effective implementation of solid waste management programs by the Local Government Units, can significantly improve the overall waste management situation in Metro Manila,” Zamora said.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), more than 60,000 tons of waste are generated daily nationwide, but only 52% of the country’s waste is collected.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier blamed improperly disposed garbage for worsening floods and urged local government units and the public to properly dispose of their waste.
For its part, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said simple clearing operations would not be enough if garbage buildup continues.
The DENR earlier admitted that implementing Republic Act No. 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, has never been easy.
The law prohibits the operation of open dumpsites and the unauthorized collection and transport of solid waste.
The department noted that several fourth- to sixth-class municipalities do not have the capacity to establish landfills in their own areas.— MCG, GMA News
