Members of a teachers group protested outside Malacañang Palace on Wednesday to raise issues of alleged neglect of the education sector, plunder of public funds, and surrender of national sovereignty to foreign powers by the current administration.
“Binigong Pilipinas ang inabot ng ating bansa dahil sa patung-patong na krisis sa ilalim ng administrasyong (Ferdinand) Marcos Jr. Lalong nabaon sa utang ang mga guro at kawani dahil sa busabos na sweldo, laganap ang kontraktwalisasyon sa maraming ahensya ng gobyerno at sa pribadong sektor, barat ang mga benepisyo, bumabaha ang kakulangan sa guro, silid-aralan, at iba pang pangangailangan sa eskwela, at pabulusok ang kalidad ng edukasyon,” said Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines Chairperson Ruby Bernardo in a press release.

Teachers and employees have sunk deeper into debt due to meager wages; contractualization is rampant across many government agencies and the private sector; benefits are paltry; there is a massive shortage of teachers, classrooms, and other school necessities; and the quality of education is in freefall.)
ACT criticized the administration for “failing to address the country’s historic shortages of teachers, classrooms, education support personnel, learning resources, and other critical education needs.”
The group said the ongoing feud between members of the UniTeam alliance “have both inflicted lasting damage on the education sector”.
ACT repeated its calls for P50,000 entry-level salary for teachers, increase in the Personnel Economic Relief Allowance (PERA) for government employees to P5,000, allocation of at least 6% of GDP to education, and end to contractualization. —RF, GMA News
