A student was injured after being hit by a van while crossing a pedestrian lane in San Mateo, Rizal, prompting the Land Transportation Office to suspend the driver’s license and issue a show cause order.
According to a report by Vonn Aquino on “24 Oras Weekend,” the incident happened along General Luna Avenue, where the student was crossing at the designated pedestrian lane.
Police Lt. Col. Armel Tabaog, San Mateo police chief, said a jeepney had stopped to allow the child to pass, but a van behind it allegedly overtook and struck the student.
The van driver reportedly stopped after the incident and immediately checked on the victim.
The student was quickly given medical attention as a hospital was located directly across the street from the accident site.
San Mateo police said the child sustained minor abrasions. The driver reportedly shouldered the victim’s hospital expenses.
Initial investigation showed that the jeepney had yielded to pedestrians, but the van overtook it and failed to notice the student crossing.
The Land Transportation Office reminded motorists that pedestrians have the right of way at designated crossings and drivers are required to stop when approaching pedestrian lanes.
Under the Land Transportation Office and the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, drivers traversing highways in business and residential areas must yield to pedestrians crossing at marked crosswalks, except at intersections controlled by traffic enforcers or signals.
Asst. Sec. Markus Lacanilao, LTO chief, said the van driver’s license has been suspended for 90 days while the case is under investigation.
He said the driver could face heavier penalties, including a longer suspension or possible revocation of his license, depending on the outcome of the probe.—MCG, GMA News
