The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday that around 2,000 police personnel will be deployed around the Senate as part of security preparations for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
PNP Directorate for Operations acting chief Police Brigadier General Rogelio Peñones Jr. said the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has already been placed on alert.
“Naka-alerto na ang NCRPO at pinaghahandaan na natin ito,” Peñones said in a press briefing.
“The deployment within the Senate perimeter is already set, and we will be deploying not less than 2,000 personnel coming from NCRPO,” he added.
The impeachment trial of Duterte is expected to begin on July 6.
According to Senator Erwin Tulfo, the Senate will hold regular sessions in the morning before proceeding with impeachment proceedings in the afternoon from Monday to Wednesday.
The impeachment complaints filed against the Vice President cite betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution, among others, over the following allegations:
- alleged misuse of P612.5 million in confidential funds, including alleged use for bribery
- alleged threats to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family, as well as remarks about removing the Chief Executive
- alleged accumulation of unexplained wealth
