The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) conducted a cleanup operation on Monday at Ilugin Creek in Pasig City, as part of its ongoing efforts to address flooding in Metro Manila.
MMDA Chair Romando Artes said the cleanup is crucial, noting that clogged waterways—often filled with trash and water hyacinths—are a major cause of floods in the metro.
Heavy equipment, including a trash skimmer, crane, backhoe, and dump truck, were deployed during the operation.
As part of the activity, the MMDA also distributed lily pots and charcoal briquettes made from processed water hyacinths at its Tapayan Pumping Station facility in Pasig.
The agency announced plans to conduct anti-dengue misting and defogging in the area to help reduce the risk of seasonal dengue outbreaks.
The cleanup forms part of the MMDA’s Bayanihan sa Estero program, which aims to rehabilitate 50 esteros across Metro Manila by the end of the year.
Joining Artes at the site were Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and Representative Roman Romulo, who inspected the operations. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
