A delivery rider who sought shelter under a tree during heavy rain died after the tree and a utility pole fell on him along Circumferential Road in Barangay San Isidro, Antipolo City, on Sunday, August 9.
According to a Facebook post by Antipolo City Mayor Jun-Andeng Ynares, rescuers immediately brought the rider to the Rizal Provincial Hospital System (RPHS) Antipolo Annex 2, where he later died from his injuries.
“At present, his family members are in Pasay, Laguna, and Catanduanes. We are waiting for them to arrive so we can properly assist and support them,” Ynares said in Filipino.
Ynares said the Antipolo City government would assist the victim’s family with funeral and burial arrangements.
Clearing operations were immediately conducted at the scene to restore normal traffic flow. In a subsequent update, Ynares said the area had been cleared and the road reopened to motorists.
The Antipolo City government urged the public to remain vigilant during heavy rain and strong winds and to avoid taking shelter near trees, utility poles, and other structures that could collapse. — MCG, GMA News
