Bakery in QC robbed; arrested suspect dead after allegedly taking gun from cop

A bakery in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City was robbed by a male suspect on Saturday.

The suspect, who was arrested on the same day, was killed after he allegedly took a gun from a police officer, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said Sunday.

Interviewed on Super Radyo dzBB, QCPD director Police Brigadier General Nicolas Torre III said that the arrested suspect, identified as Jose Palmares Jr., was shot on the head after he allegedly took a gun from a cop inside the QCPD.

“Nalingap ‘yung isa sa mga bantay…Ay bigla na lang, hindi naman siya ‘yung involved na bantay du’n, nadamba, nakuha ang baril niya. Eh napilitan ang mga pulis natin na barilin siya,” he said.

(A police officer was guarding the suspect when the latter snatched the firearm of another cop. So our police were forced to shoot him.)

“Hindi naman natin kagustuhang patayin ‘yung tao na ‘yan. Nagkataon lang talaga na tawag ng pagkakataon. Dinala namin sa ospital, chine-check namin ang sitwasyon…Dead on arrival yata kanina,” he added.

(We didn’t want to kill that person, but we had to. We took him to the hospital, we checked the situation…I think he was dead on arrival.)

According to Torre, Palmares robbed the bakery along Congressional Avenue in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City at around 4 p.m. on Saturday.

He said the suspect was able to escape after the incident, taking away money and phone from the bakery, and causing harm to its cashier.

“‘Yung cashier, may mga sugat pa nga, dahil pinagsasaksak niya kahapon. Nag-attempt siyang saksakin. Buti na lang…naitulak siya, napalo rin siya ng thong. Kahapon, ang away ng dalawang ‘to, holdaper at saka nagbabantay—kutsilyo laban sa thong o pangkuha ng pandesal,” Torre said.

(The cashier even has wounds, because the suspect stabbed him yesterday. Luckily, the cashier was able to push him and hit him with a thong. Yesterday, the fight between them was a knife versus thong used for getting pandesal.)

Palmares was arrested in a follow-up police operation later on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a retired lawyer who claimed to be a former employer of Palmares also went to the QCPD to testify against him, according to a report of Carlo Mateo on Super Radyo dzBB.

He said Palmares served as his longtime family driver, and he as employer, helped him get his children to go to school.

The retired lawyer said Palmares only changed his attitude when he was influenced by his friends.

Four reserve mag wheels and tires, two bicycles, and other household items went missing in their house after that, prompting the retired lawyer to terminate Palmares at work. —KG, GMA Integrated News
