President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Manila during the 21st East Asia Summit, one of the meetings in the Philippines’ hosting of the ASEAN Summits this year.

In a Facebook post, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said Marcos and Putin held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan, Russia.

Marcos, speaking as ASEAN chair, “also invited President Putin to the 21st East Asia Summit in Manila, underscoring the role of the forum in promoting a stable, secure, and prosperous region,” the PCO said.

The two leaders discussed the potential for expanded cooperation as Marcos cited the value of “regular political consultations.”

He said there is “a great deal more that we can do” with energy and food security as shared priorities with Russia.

Meanwhile, Putin pointed to the “longstanding tradition” of mutual respect between Manila and Moscow and said there is a potential for greater cooperation in trade, agriculture, and energy.

“He also underscored the importance of existing mechanisms, including the Joint Russia-Philippine Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation,” the PCO added. — JMA, GMA News
