THE best and the brightest poor students entering college in the metro usually aim for the University of the Philippines because tuition is free. But getting into UP — the country’s top higher education institution — is difficult. Enrollment is limited due to the large volume of applicants nationwide, assuming one hurdles its dreaded admissions test, the UPCAT.
But take heart, there’s Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle — both very expensive schools which, interestingly, offer a good number of scholarships to applicants who top their respective entrance exams.
Ateneo Freshman Merit Scholarship (AFMS)

For the top 50 applicants from local private, science, or public high schools, and from senior high schools abroad — who have done very well in the Ateneo College Entrance Test (ACET) and have distinguished themselves academically, as well as in co-curricular activities, in their respective senior high schools.
Benefits:
– 100-percent free tuition and fees scholarship;
– P50,000 annual allowance;
– Choose any degree program.
Director’s List Scholarship
For 150 outstanding applicants to be given an annual P100,000 scholarship grant in any undergraduate degree of their choice.
Fr. Bienvenido F. Nebres SJ Science Academic Scholarship
For valedictorians and salutatorians of science high schools who are accepted into any undergraduate degree program under the Ateneo School of Science and Engineering.
Benefits:
– 100-percent free tuition and fees for certified valedictorians;
– 50-percent free tuition and fees for certified salutatorians.
Fr. Thomas B. Steinbugler SJ Academic Scholarship
For valedictorians and salutatorians of Jesuit senior high schools with excellent ACET results, in any degree program.
Benefits:
– 100-percent free tuition and fees for certified valedictorians;
– 50-percent free tuition and fees for certified salutatorians.
Jose P. Rizal Academic Scholarship
For valedictorians and salutatorians of public senior high schools with excellent ACET results.
Benefits:
– 100-percent free tuition and fees for certified valedictorians;
– 50-percent free tuition and fees for certified salutatorians.
Financial Aid Grants
For deserving but financially challenged students in all degree programs. Limited slots; scholars are selected on the basis of the following criteria:
– Financial need is clearly evident in the Financial Aid Questionnaire;
– Intellectual ability and proven consistent academic performance;
– Service to the community and potential for greater service in the future.
Grants may be a combination of:
– 100, 75, 50, 25 percent free tuition and fees;
– Book allowance;
– Transportation allowance;
– Food allowance;
– Dormitory assistance.
Magis Scholarship
For applicants who are within the most financially constrained circumstances, who have demonstrated excellence in academic and non-academic endeavors, and who have the potential to become servant-leaders.
Benefits:
– 100-percent free tuition and fees for any 4 or 5-year course;
– Food and living allowance;
– Books, supplies, and printing allowance;
– On-campus dormitory scholarship or transportation allowance;
– Miscellaneous allowance for other needs;
– Round-trip airfare every semester, as applicable;

De La Salle University Star Scholars Program
Applicants who top the De La Salle College Admission Test (DCAT) are screened and interviewed to fill the limited slots in the program. They have the option to earn a master’s degree, go to medical school proper (for BS Human Biology students), or enroll in the DLDU School of Law after finishing their undergraduate degree on a full scholarship.
Benefits:
– Full waiver on tuition and fees;
–Monthly stipend;
– Provision for iPad or tablet;
– Mentoring by University Fellows;
– Possible study abroad grant
Vaugirard Scholarship Program
Named after Vaugirard, France, where St. John Baptist de La Salle founded his first novitiate, this scholarship is exclusively for Filipino graduates of public and science high schools. Must be among the DCAT topnotchers.
Benefits:
– Full waiver on tuition, miscellaneous, laboratory fees throughout their stay;
– Cash incentive for those graduating with Latin honors;
– Advance enrollment privileges;
– Monthly stipend.
Br. Andrew Gonzalez Academic Scholarship
For La Salle district schools students with the highest honors in STEM, ABM, or HUMMS who have passed the DCAT.

– Full academic scholarship (tuition and fees)
Gokongwei Grants
For the top 100 examinees, or be listed as an Archer Achiever, in the DCAT, with an academic degree program in the Gokongwei College of Engineering as their first choice.
Benefits:
– 100-percent waiver on tuition and fees;
– Monthly stipend of 18,000 to cover accommodation, meals, transportation and communication, school supplies, and other school-related expenses;
– Advance enrollment privilege;
– Graduation fee incentives;
– Alumni fee membership incentives;
– Latin honors incentives;
– Exchange program benefit.
Archer Achiever Scholarship
For Filipino applicants from private/public and science high schools who top the DCAT based on the weighted admission index. Qualified candidates may choose to be interviewed for an upgrade to Star, Gokongwei, or Vaugirard scholarships.
Benefits:
– Full waiver of tuition, miscellaneous and other fees;
– Advance enrollment;
– Waiver of adjustment fee;
– Waiver of graduation fees.
Brother President Scholarship Program
For legitimate or legally adopted children of married, permanent and full-time faculty, and administrative service personnel who joined DLSU in May 1987 or after, and have served the university for at least three years, and are in active university service. Must pass the DCAT.
Centennial Scholarship Program (CSP)
This is a supplement to the Brother President Scholarship Program for qualified children of full-time, permanent faculty (teaching and academic service) and administrative service personnel (ASP) of DLSU. Must pass the DCAT.
Scholarship for Children of Co-Academic Personnel
For dependents of Co-Academic Personnel. Must have passed the entrance requirements of La Salle Green Hills, De La Salle-Santiago Zobel School, De La Salle-Araneta University, De La Salle College of Saint Benilde, or De La Salle University.
Scholarship for Children of Faculty
For qualified children of full-time, part-time, and retired faculty members who joined DLSU before May 1987. Must have passed the entrance requirements of DLSU, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, La Salle Green Hills, or De La Salle Santiago-Zobel School.
Military Scholarship
Dependents of military personnel who died or became incapacitated in the line of duty are exempted from the payment of tuition based on the availability of slots.
Student Loan Program
A short-term, interest-free loan facility for the payment of tuition and fees of undergraduate and graduate students with at least one term of enrollment and without any unsettled loan with DLSU. Applicants may borrow a maximum of 100 percent of the total amount of tuition and fees.
Student Assistantship and Resource Training (Start) Program
Students who meet all criteria for eligibility may be hired to work as temporary personnel in the university for a minimum of five to a maximum of 20 hours per week.
Athletic Scholarship/Tuition Discount
Athletes or varsity players may enjoy a full or partial tuition and/or fees waiver. Grantees are recommended by the Office of Sports Development (OSD).
Cultural Arts Tuition Discount
For members of the DLSU Chorale, Harlequin Theater Guild, La Salle Dance Company, Green Media Group, De La Salle Inner Soul, and Lasallian Youth Orchestra. Specific tuition discounts may be awarded to grantees recommended by the Cultural Arts Office.
Student Publications Tuition Discount
Senior editors of three undergraduate student publications, The La Sallian, Ang Pahayagang Plaridel, and Malate Literary Journal, may avail of specific tuition discounts upon the recommendation of the Student Publications Office.
Family Tuition Discount
Families with three or more children concurrently enrolled in DLSU undergraduate programs are eligible to receive a 10-percent discount on tuition fees for each enrolled child.
