13 Filipinos still unaccounted for in HK fires, says consulate

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong said 13 Filipinos remain unaccounted for following the Nov. 26 fires that struck the Wang Fuk Court Residential Complex.

According to a 24 Oras Weekend report on Saturday, the 13 individuals have not been officially listed as missing, but authorities have yet to confirm their whereabouts.

As of Saturday, the number of injured Filipinos remains at one, while no additional Filipinos have been reported missing.

Hong Kong has entered a three-day mourning period after what officials described as the city’s worst blaze in the last 80 years.

In an interview, overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Carren Dapdap said she and her five-year-old charge survived the fire.

She recalled that she did not hear any fire alarm and was only alerted by her employer, prompting her to evacuate immediately from their ninth-floor unit.

“Sarado po lahat, tahimik. ‘Yung alaga ko nanonood ng TV, ako nagtratrabaho sa kusina. Pagbukas ko ng pinto, may usok na. Ang [swerte] lang po kasi, ‘yung pinto namin katabi lang ng fire exit door, so medyo kabisado ko na rin,” she said.

(Everything was closed and quiet. My charge was watching TV and I was working in the kitchen. When I opened the door, there was already smoke. What was fortunate was that our door was right next to the fire exit, so I already knew the layout.) —Jiselle Anne Casucian/MCG, GMA Integrated News
