To understand the gravity of the climate crisis that has now put humanity,
as aptly described by thousands of concerned scientists world-wide as just ‘ONE
MINUTE BEFORE MIDNIGHT” as Mother Earth (GAIA) is now in the brink of
falling into the precipice of its 6 th extinction, it is so important to know the
amazing speech of a Swedish world well-known environmental activist in 2018
when then 15-yr. old GRETA THUNBERG addressed world leaders in the UNITED
NATIONS climate change summit in Poland. Greta spoke with moral clarity of
an entire generation sentenced to a desperate future:
“OUR CIVILIZATION IS BEING SACRIFICED TO THE OPPORTUNITY OF A
VERY SMALL NUMBER OF PEOPLE TO CONTINUE MAKING ENORMOUS
AMOUNTS OF MONEY. OUR BIOSPHERE IS BEING SACRIFICED SO THAT RICH
PEOPLE IN COUNTRIES LIKE MINE CAN LIVE IN LUXURY, IT IS THE SUFFERINGS
OF THE MANY WHICH PAY FOR THE LUXURY OF THE FEW.
WE HAVE NOT COME HERE TO BEG WORLD LEADERS TO CARE. YOU HAVE
IGNORED US IN THE PAST, AND YOU WILL IGNORE US AGAIN. WE HAVE RUN
OUT OF EXCUSES, AND WE RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME. WE HAVE COME HERE
TO LET YOU KNOW THAT CHANGE IS COMING, WHETER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.
THE REAL POWER BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE.”
With these words, Greta Thunberg kicked off a worldwide revolution. As
narrated by concerned environmentalists, ”Since her speech, tens of millions of
people of all ages in 185 countries around the world have joined her climate
strike buoyed by her clear vision of a world that’s not just survival but thriving.
People want something to hope for. People want to be asked to do something
big. People want a chance to be courageous, a chance at shaping their own
future.”
The long awaited voice of the young generation is now being bannered as
the truth now looms like the long awaited light amidst the darkness of lies and
the fallacies of life spread out by the profit-driven media in cohort with the rich
and powerful. Indeed, never will these corporations moderate their greed as the
One Percent Regime called the “Masters of Mankind,” and the “Masters of the
Universe,” will continue killing the earth as they cannot moderate their greed.
How will they stop the use of fossil fuel and coal as the 19 corporations are
earning 19 trillion dollars annually or 10 million dollars every minute from the
use of these highly carbon-dioxide emitting fossil fuel? How can these Masters
be stopped when their accumulation of gargantuan wealth is shared with
powers-that-be, reinforcing the truism that indeed high veneration to the
profit-motive has already captured the mindset of all governments, all
institutions, all universities and even of religious groups.
As concluded by studies of environmentalists, “Climate change is a
symptom of a distorted imperialist worldview: the continued exploitation of
the Earth is justifiable because humans exist separate from and can claim
dominion over the environment. This worldview, championed by Christians and
captains of industries alike, promotes and preserves business as usual and has
led us to the brink of ecological collapse. ”Now we know that it is not enough
to say that the Earth is now dying but is in fact being killed by the so-called
“Masters of Mankind,” under the Regime of One Percent whose total wealth is
far greater than the combined assets of the 99% of the Earth’s population of 8
billion people. Are you still puzzled why in a world of abundance, some one
billion people are hungry, especially in Asia?
What is the horrible crime committed by the Regime of One Percent? Let
me share the independent report commissioned by 20 countries in 2012 to
study the human and economic costs of climate change, the study wrote that it:
“linked 400,000 deaths worldwide to climate change each year, projecting
deaths to increase to over 600,000 per year by 2030. Heat waves kill many, to
be sure, but global warming also devastates food security, nutrition, and water
safety. Since mosquitoes and other pest thrive in hot, humid weather, scientists
expect diseases like malaria and dengue fever to rise. Floods threaten to
contaminate drinking water with bacteria and pollution. When the report
looked at the added health consequences of burning coal and fossil fuels –
aside from climate change – the number of deaths jumped from 600,000 to
almost 5 million per year. Carbon-intensive economies see deaths, linked to
outdoor air pollution, indoor smoke from poor ventilation, occupational hazards
and skin cancer.”
In his book, “Age of Sustainability,” Mr. Jeffrey Sachs said, “Like all living
species, humanity depends on nature for food and water, material for survival
and safety from dire environmental threats, such as epidemics and natural
catastrophe. Yes for a species that depends on the beneficence of nature, or on
what the scientists call environmental services, we are doing a poor job of
protecting the physical basis of our very survival! THE GIGANTIC WORLD
ECONOMY IS CREATING A GIGANTIC ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS AS IT IS KILLING
THE EARTH, ONE THAT THREATENS THE LIVES AND WELL-BEING OF BILLIONS OF
PEOPLE AND THE SURVIVAL OF MILLIONS OF OTHER SPECIES ON THE PLANET IF
NOT OUR OWN.”
Indeed, it must dawn upon all of us now the real culprit and threat to
humanity is climate change but such truism is being hidden through media
collusion in cohort with powerful corporations. Let notice be served to one and
all that climate change is a crime against Mother Earth, humanity and the
Creator during these most challenging times of moral collapse and religious
apathy. Don’t you know that the Philippines is the 4 th hardest hit country in the
world by climate change as hundreds of thousands Filipinos especially those
living in the vulnerable areas have perished out of horrible storms/typhoons in
last five decades with greater number rendered homeless? Glaringly, our
country has already lost its ecological security with the vanishment of the 17
million hectares of dipterocarp forest that has supplied the timber needs of the
countries of the One Percent Regime. After losing our ecological wealth above
the ground, the focus now of the One Percent is to extract the wealth below the
ground through massive illegal mining. As a consequence, 10 of the 13 major
bays in the country are now biologically dead through massive siltation. These
“Masters” have already transformed massively our choicest of land especially
here in Mindanao into massive plantations that eliminated our food security.
Under the One Percent Regime, our country is supplying the consumerist needs
of the people in advanced countries with high value fruits while we cannot even
produce enough basic staples for our hungry people. Worse, these corporations
have installed in Mindanao six coal-fired power plants that have created so
much debacle ecologically.
WE URGENTLY NEED THE LIKES OF GRETA THUNBERG. No less than His
Holiness the DALAI LAMA HAS APPREACIATED THE MESSAGE OF GRETA TO THE
UNITED NATIONS WITH THIS MESSAGE: “IT IS ENCOURAGING TO SEE HOW YOU
HAVE OPENED THE EYES OF THE WORLD TO THE URGENCY TO PROTECT OUR
PLANET, OUR ONLY HOME AT THE SAME TIME, YOU HAVE INSPIRED THE MANY
YOUNG BROTHERS AND SISTERS TO JOIN THE MOVEMENT.”
