Northern Mindanao inflation rate slows down to 3.1%
Inflation rate in Northern Mindanao slowed down to 3.1 percent in January 2024, thanks to a decline of prices of fish, meat and other food commodities.
Janith Aves, officer-in-charge of the Philippine Statistics Authority in Region 10, said other contributary factors to the downtrend of the inflation rate are the prices of housing, water and electricity.
Ferdinand Caraballe, supervising agriculturist at the Department of Agriculture, however, said the incoming dry season and El Niño could spike the prices for rice in Northern Mindanao.
Region 10 or Northern Mindanao comprises the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte, Bukidnon, and Camiguin. It has two highly urbanized cities (Cagayan de Oro and Iligan), seven constituent cities, and 84 municipalities.
4ID defers demolition of houses inside Camp Evangelista
The Army’s 4th Infantry Division has deferred the demolition of houses inside the Camp Evangelista military reservation so the school children of the affected families can finish their schooling this year.
Maj. Gen. Jose Maria Cuerpo II, 4ID commander, said this is to make way for the coordination meetings with local officials.
Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy promised that he would find some land for the 427 families that would be affected by the demolition.
The Supreme Court ruled that the land where the affected residents constructed their houses is actually part of the military reservation based on Presidential Proclamation No. 265 issued in 1938.
Gunsmith in Zamboanga Sibugay nabbed
Police arrested a gunsmith allegedly operating illegally and seized several firearms and ammunition from his residence in Zamboanga Sibugay last Tuesday.
Brig. Gen. Bowenn Joey Masauding, Zamboanga Police Director, identified the illegal gunsmith only as “Gaga” but said the raid in his house in Purok Mangga, Kima Village in Payao town was done by a search warrant issued in Ipil town.
Police seized two M16 rifles, two KG9 automatic rifles, three 12-gauge shotguns, four caliber .38 revolvers and ammunition, assorted gun parts, and gunsmith tools from the suspect’s house.
