A man in Caloocan City saved a bird that got snagged on a thread hanging from a utility pole.

In Kuya Kim’s report on “24 Oras,” Thursday, the Good Samaritan, Greggy Vicente, narrated how he was able to get the bird free.

“‘Yung pakpak niya, nakasabit sa sinulid. Tinatry niyang makawala,” he said. “Dahil naawa ako, sabi ko sa anak ko, ‘Tara baba tayo tulungan natin.'”

Greggy said the thread was as high as the roof of their neighbor’s three-story house, so he did not know how to help the bird at first. He did not have a ladder the reach the animal.

He decided to tie straws to a slipper and throw it to the other side of the thread to bring it down.

“‘Yung ibon kasi nasa may left side and then ‘yung tina-try kong abutin na sinulid is ‘yung sa right side para lang maibaba ko ‘yung sinulid,” he said. “Sobrang challenging talaga pero ‘yung inisip ko talaga nun is ma-save ko ‘yung ibon.”

After several attempts, the slipper finally got caught in the thread and he gently pulled it down with the straw.

“Nung nahawakan ko na siya, unti-unting kong tinanggal ‘yung sinulid dun sa pakpak niya. Medyo nasira na nga ‘yung right wing niya dahil dun sa sinulid,” he said.

Greggy said he checked if the bird was fine before he slowly let it go. He also observed if it could still fly.

“Nakalipad naman siya at nakapunta dun sa kabilang side ng kapitbahay namin sa bubong,” he said.

“And then nakita ko one last time lumingon pa siya sa may side namin so feeling ko nag-thank you pa rin siya kahit pano dahil natulungan namin siya.”

The bird that Greggy saved is called the mayang simbahan or Eurasian tree sparrow. It has brown, white, and black feathers.

It is called mayang simbahan because they are often found on churches and other old buildings during the Spanish colonial period. However, it is not native to the Philippines and originally from Europe and Asia.

Mayang simbahan is not the same maya that was formerly designated as the national bird of the Philippines. That bird is the mayang pula, which has chocolate-colored head and chest and red-colored stomach and flank. —MGP, GMA News
