DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 04 June) – MindaNews was awarded the 2025 Best News Website for Mindanao by the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) during its 30th Community Press Awards on Thursday. This marks the second consecutive win for MindaNews, having also secured the title in 2024.
MindaNews editor-in-chief Bobby Timonera received the award at Hotel Lucky Chinatown in Binondo, Manila, just 10 days after the organization celebrated its 25th anniversary on May 25.
PPI praised MindaNews for its “strong focus on local and regional stories,” highlighting its special reports on issues such as Mindanao’s trafficked minors, Dinagat’s watersheds, and the region’s climate justice struggles. The website was commended for its minimalist yet multimedia-friendly design, ease of navigation, and intentional use of white space to reduce visual clutter. SunStar Davao was the other finalist in the category.
In its 2024 citation, PPI noted that MindaNews “captures Mindanao’s heart and soul,” delivering news with cultural insight and maintaining a no-frills design that reflects its journalistic substance. The Fact-Check section was particularly lauded.
MindaNews has earned multiple accolades over the years, including the Outstanding Community Newspaper-Daily award from PPI in April 2024 and the first Gen Ong Laurel for Journalism at the 4th Lagerwey Awards in May 2024. Earlier recognitions include CMFR’s 2015 “Award of Distinction,” Ateneo de Davao’s 2013 “Favorite Online News Portal” title, and the 2010 “Ateneo Peace Award” from Ateneo de Zamboanga University for its contributions to peace and development reporting.
Other winners at the 30th Community Press Awards included Palawan News (Best News Website – Luzon), SunStar Cebu (Best News Website – Visayas), and various regional publications recognized for excellence in photojournalism, environmental reporting, and editorial content. (MindaNews)
