DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/4 May) – Akbayan Party-list Rep. Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno emphasized that the impeachment process remains crucial in removing corrupt officials who misuse public funds, despite the ongoing oil crisis.
The lawmaker addressed criticisms against Justice Committee members for pursuing the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte amid rising fuel prices and economic challenges caused by the Middle East conflict.
“At this time, as we face increasing costs of basic commodities, low wages, and the crisis in the Middle East, many ask why this impeachment is being pursued. Is it merely a waste of time for public servants?” Diokno said during the House Justice Committee hearing on Monday.
He argued that impeachment serves as a swift constitutional mechanism to hold officials accountable and determine their fitness for office. “Public funds will continue to be misused if undeserving officials remain in power,” he added.
Diokno stressed that the case is pursued for families struggling with inflation, workers battling poverty, and youth seeking a just future. “Public officials must not enrich themselves with taxpayers’ money. Funds should serve the general welfare, not personal gain,” he said.
“Our people deserve leaders who strengthen institutions, not those who exploit them. That is why impeachment remains vital, even in times of crisis,” Diokno concluded. (Antonio L. Colina IV/MindaNews)
