I was born and raised in Davao City, a place that has been misunderstood by many due to the stories and stereotypes surrounding the Duterte family. However, for me, Davao is more than its strict rules and policies – it’s a city that shaped my childhood and the woman I am today. Growing up in Davao, I experienced a unique blend of discipline and kindness, with a strong sense of community and respect for rules. The city is famous for its majestic Mount Apo, delicious durian, and vibrant cultural diversity, where indigenous, Muslim, and Christian communities coexist peacefully.
As a child, I would often walk with my mother through the city, exploring the markets and streets, and later, as a street educator, I would walk the same routes, looking for children in need. The city taught me structure and discipline, but also kindness and community, which became an anchor for me. Davao is a city where people respect each other’s spaces, and everyone knows their place. The city has a rich cultural heritage, with a blend of Lumad traditions, Muslim heritage, and Christian values, and the people of Davao reflect this diversity, being grounded, warm, and enduring.
The Kadayawan Festival, celebrated every August, is a time for the community to come together and give thanks to their ancestors, nature, and each other. It’s a celebration of the city’s cultural diversity, with different tribes showcasing their unique traditions and customs. Leaving Davao in 2019 to work in a remote area was a bold step for me, but I carried the values and lessons I learned in Davao with me, including the importance of social responsibility and the concept of being a “Dabawenyo,” which means being true and honest.
Davao taught me to stand tall, even when standing alone, and to believe in the value of my work. The city has a strong sense of community, and the people of Davao are known for their resilience and kindness. Even though the city is evolving and changing, it still retains its soul and charm. For me, Davao will always be home, a place that raised me to lead with heart and live with humility. It’s a city that gives you space to grow, to stumble, to succeed, and to serve, and I hope that others can experience the same sense of community and belonging that I have.
