Gun battle in Maguindanao ends up in a wedding
A gun battle in Barangay Sapakan, Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur, startled residents last Friday, prompting them to seek safety. The clash concluded with both warring parties agreeing to cease hostilities and unite through a marriage between two of their members. Lt. Col. Roden Orbon, spokesperson of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, explained that the conflict began when Moro Islamic Liberation Front leader Sukor Guiamalon discovered his 15-year-old daughter had eloped with the 21-year-old brother of barangay captain Mohamad Tatak. After military intervention, both families agreed to a wedding for the couple.

Siargao airport expansion work to start Aug. 8
The Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday that construction for the expanded passenger terminal building at Siargao Airport will commence on August 8. Secretary Vince Dizon stated that the project will triple the airport’s daily passenger capacity, enhancing the travel experience for tourists. The new terminal will accommodate 750 passengers, up from the current capacity of 200 passengers daily.

Police rescues 2 potential human trafficking victims in Tawi-Tawi
Two potential victims of human trafficking were rescued by police upon their arrival at Bongao Port, Tawi-Tawi, on July 31. Maj. Alrashid Tulawie, Tawi-Tawi Maritime Police Station chief, reported that the victims were identified during a profile check of passengers arriving from Zamboanga City. They failed to present necessary documents when questioned by authorities. Tulawie noted that police have intensified checks on ferry passengers following reports of an increase in individuals traveling to Malaysia without proper work permits.
