Telcos ask for SIM card registration extension

TELECOMMUNICATION companies in the Philippines appealed to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and National Telecommunications Commission to extend the SIM card registration.

The telcos noted the lack of identification cards (ID) as the number one reason for the subscribers’ failure to register their SIM cards. The registration is supposed to end on April 26, 2023.

“We are here to continuously support the government in its SIM registration initiative. While we have led in the number of registrations to date with about 46 percent of our total number of subscribers already registered, which is higher than industry average, we see the need to give subscribers more time to secure the government IDs required to register their SIMs. We stand ready with the government to support any undertaking to fast track completing the SIM Registration process as required by law,” said Cathy Yang, first vice president and head of Group Corporate Communications at PLDT and Smart, in a statement on Wednesday, April 12.

“Given these issues, we appeal to the government to extend the SIM registration process to give our customers more time to get their required government IDs and input the required information on our site,” said Globe in a statement on Tuesday, April 11.

Smart reported that as of April 10, about 32,479,499 or 48.99 percent of its subscribers nationwide have registered their SIM cards, while Globe recorded 27,783,028 registered SIM cards, or 32.03 percent of its subscribers.

DITO, meanwhile, recorded 4,882,913 registered SIM cards, or 32.63 percent of its subscribers.

The DICT said that as of April 10, about 65,145,440 of the 168,016,400 subscribers in the country have so far registered their SIMs. This represents 38.77 percent of the total subscribers nationwide. (REV/LMY)
