SLOW down and save lives. This was the theme of Road Safety Week 2023 at Taiheiyo Cement Philippines Inc., encapsulating the essence of the celebration within the company premises in San Fernando, Cebu, which took place recently.
Employees who operated their personal or company vehicles, as well as company drivers and those from its haulers and other suppliers, participated in a series of seminars and activities organized by the company’s environment and safety department (ESD). With the support of the central safety environment and health committee of the company and the local government of San Fernando, the week-long celebration commenced with a caravan in the town, starting from the haulers’ park and culminating at the basketball court.
Mayor Mytha Basubas Canoy inaugurated the series of seminars, and she was accompanied by company executives and all individuals involved in the event. Participants pledged to consistently adhere to road rules and courteous behavior to ensure the safety of themselves and others.
The ESD organized the participants into batches for seminars held at the junior staff house, focusing on defensive driving, road safety, and traffic rules under Republic Act 4136, which compiles laws related to land transportation and traffic regulations.
The series also included specialized orientation and awareness sessions for truck drivers and loaders responsible for handling cement sacks during truck loading.
They also participated in simulations of internal traffic rules in the packhouse area. The ESD also conducted thorough inspections of all trailers used for transporting cement bags from the company’s compound and its warehouse in Liloan. A poster-making contest was organized among drivers and truck loaders, as reported by ESD manager Dwight Avila.
