Police file raps vs vlogger for spreading ‘false info’

THE Central Visayas Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit has filed a complaint against a vlogger for allegedly spreading false information about an incident inside a bus in Liloan, Cebu.

In a statement, Central Visayas Regional Police Office Director Brigadier General Red Maranan said complaints for violation of Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code, or the Unlawful Use of Means of Publication and Unlawful Utterances, in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act 10175, or Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, was filed against “Jaissle” before the Office of the City Prosecutor in Cebu City on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Maranan said the vlogger re-posted a video of what he claimed was a snatching incident inside a bus in the portion of Yati, Liloan, Cebu “in order to make it appear that crime incidents are rampant,” causing fear among the public.

He clarified, however, that the incident, which happened on May 8, 2025, is not a snatching incident but an altercation between some of the passengers.

(We will not let anyone get away with using social media to spread false information that causes fear and confusion among the public. This serves as a warning: anyone who creates fake news will be held accountable.)

Maranan urged the public to be vigilant against misinformation and disinformation especially on social media.

In a press conference earlier, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Nicolas Torre III assured the PNP’s continuous effort to prevent crime incidents through strategic police deployment and monitoring in communities and to resolve cases, bringing the suspects in the folds of the law.

Torre blamed the “DDS” for the spread of fake news especially of clips of crime incidents, making it seem like it only happened recently in order to make it appear that crime, under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., is rampant.

(Those viral and most vitriolic posters clearly contain anti-government propaganda — and they openly identify themselves as true DDS, saying it themselves.)

All those cases, all those issue that they are saying that they are harping about,” he added.

(So why are they now making it seem like it just happened yesterday? The problem is — they’ve run out of issues to throw at this government, so now they’re digging things up… As I see it, we’re all Filipinos. We all want our country to improve. So let’s just come together and set aside those differences for now. All those cases, all those issues they keep harping on — let them go.) (TPM/SunStar Philippines)
