Mandaue accepts college scholarship applications for upcoming school year

AROUND 30 college scholarship grants are now available for the poor but deserving students in Mandaue City.

City Councilor Malcom Sanchez, chairman of the Committee of Education, announced during the City Council’s regular session on Monday, March 20, 2023, that the City Government is now accepting scholarship applications for the upcoming school semester.

Sanchez said the number of scholarship grants could increase depending on the budget, which will be taken from the city’s Special Education Fund.

The program is supported by City Ordinance 16-2022-1732 that was passed last year.

Sanchez said the applicants will undergo a screening by the advisory board, whose members include board chairman Mandaue Mayor Jonas Cortes, chair of the City Council’s Committee on Appropriation Budget and Finance, Mandaue City Schools Division superintendent, city administrator, legal officer and budget officer.

Based on the guidelines, the applicant must be a resident of Mandaue for at least three years. He/she must have completed secondary education in both public and private schools and have an average grade of not less than 85 percent but not below 80 percent or 2.0 to 2.5.

The applicant must submit to the mayor’s office an information data sheet with a 2×2 current photo, a report card, and a family’s annual income tax return of not more than P250,000.

Qualified applicants will receive around P17,500 in cash per semester.

In 2022, the City released 50 scholarship grants. (HIC)
