CEBU Governor Gwendolyn Garcia ordered the temporary suspension of canyoneering activities in the towns of Ginatilan and Malabuyoc.
This is in line with Executive Order (EO) 21 issued by the governor on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
Garcia claimed that one of the reasons for her order is the risk of canyoneering activities from alleged unlicensed operators and untrained tour guides, as well as to give the provincial government time to establish new regulatory guidelines pertaining to canyoneering to ensure the safety of visitors.
“It is an urgent need to temporarily close and suspend canyoneering activities in these municipalities pending: (1) the required specialized training and accreditation for tour guides…,” according to the EO.
“Any injury or mishap resulting from the gross neglect of the possible dangers that unqualified canyoneering tour guides may cause to the public would definitely adversely affect the tourism industry of Cebu,” it added.
The EO will take effect immediately and be lifted at the governor’s discretion.(ANV, TPT)
