Danao City bans live pigs, pork from Carcar, Negros

DANAO City in northern Cebu has joined other areas in the island and the Visayas in banning the entry of live pigs and pork products from Carcar City and Negros due to the threat of African swine fever (ASF).

Mayor Thomas Mark Durano of Danao City issued on March 8, 2023 Executive Order 20, prohibiting the entry to the city of live hogs, sows, piglets, boar semen, pork and pork-related products from Carcar City and Negros Island, where the presence of ASF has been noted.

“The City of Danao cannot risk the incursion of the disease within its area,” the EO stated.

The EO was also issued as the City Government wants to “maintain the province of Cebu as an ASF-free zone and the City’s mandate in securing it from zoonotic, communicable and or infectious diseases, as well as to promote the health and safety of the people,” Durano said in the order.

“The City strictly prohibits within its territorial jurisdiction the entry of live hogs and any pork-related meat products, both processed and cooked, from Carcar City and form Negros Oriental,” it stressed.

The entry of live hogs (adults and piglets) and any pork-related meat products, both processed and cooked, from outside sources will also be regulated.

They could not entry Danao without appropriate documents, such as but not limited to the “animal health certificate, MIC (Meat Inspection Certificate), COMI (Certificate of Meat Inspection), and barangay backyard farm certificate (place of origin).”

Durano said these documents will be subject to validation, assessment and approval by his office.

The EO will remain enforced unless revoked, the EO stated.

Earlier, Cebu Province and the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue, as well as the Province of Bohol announced their respective orders banning the entry of the same products after ASF was detected in Carcar City in southern Cebu.

The Cebu Provincial Office said that the pigs that tested positive came from Negros Island and were slaughtered along with pigs in Carcar City. (LMY)
